Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards for Air Conditioning and Heating in Canada to Increase as of January 1st, 2023

Air Conditioning 2

Recently, Energy Canada issued a new “M1 Standard” for air conditioning and heating for 2023, which raises the minimum energy efficiency standards for air conditioning and heating (from 13 SEER to 14 SEER for air conditioning and 14 SEER to 15 SEER for heating). The policy also requires air conditioning and heating manufacturers to test to higher standards, which will better improve the efficiency of the overall market as well as meet the government’s environmental goals.

The new standards may lead to an increase in equipment price, but in the long run, higher energy efficiency can also save more energy costs. The new standard will come into effect on January 1, 2023, as described below.

Introduction to the M1 Standard

The new “M1 Standard” will apply to: split air conditioners, split heaters (including mini-splits) and packaged units. The “M1 Standard” covers the same area as before, including the northern U.S. and all of Canada (see chart below). The effective date of the standard varies by region and product type.
