What is Greener Home Grant?

Canada Greener Home Grant can assist homeowners in enhancing their homes’ energy efficiency and combating climate change. Eligible homeowners may receive up to $5,600 to cover expenses related to conducting an EnerGuide assessment and implementing energy-efficient retrofits.

Rebate Amount:

The rebate amount offered is up to $5,000.

Who is Eligible to Apply:

To apply for the program, you must be the owner of the home and provide proof of ownership during registration.

Grant Amounts:

The Canada Greener Homes Grant provides varying grant amounts based on the type of building and upgrade completed. For full eligibility details, refer to the Canada Greener Homes Grant website.

Reimbursements:

If you are eligible for the program, you may receive a maximum of $5,000 for eligible retrofits. To be eligible for reimbursement, homeowners must carry out at least one retrofit. Attention, the retrofit should be recommended by an energy advisor and meets eligibility criteria.

Additionally, you may be reimbursed up to $600 for the cost of your pre-and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation.

Upgrades and Rebate Amounts:

Eligible upgrades and their corresponding rebate amounts under the Canada Greener Homes Grant program:

  1. Home Insulation: Update your eligible attic/ceiling, exterior wall, exposed floor, basement, or foundation and crawlspaces. You may receive up to $5,000 in rebates.
  2. Air-Sealing: Perform air sealing to improve the air-tightness of your home and achieve the air-change rate target. You may receive up to $1,000 in rebates.
  3. Windows and Doors: Replace your windows or glass doors with ENERGY STAR® certified models. You may receive up to $5,000 in rebates.
  4. Thermostats: Add a smart thermostat to improve your comfort and save on your energy bill.
  5. Heating: Switch to more energy-efficient heating equipment to save on your utility bill and reduce your carbon footprint. You may receive up to $5,000 in rebates.
  6. Renewable Energy: Install photovoltaic solar panels to convert sunlight energy into electricity. You may receive up to $5,000 in rebates.
  7. Resiliency Measures: Incentives are available to help protect your home and family from environmental damage. This must combine with another retrofit, and you may receive up to $2,625 in rebates.
  8. Small Multi-Unit Residential Buildings (MURBs): Learn more about how to multiply your incentives if you live in a multi-unit residential building. For more details, please see the program’s website.

To be eligible for the Canada Greener Homes Grant, you must:

  • Register through the Homeowner Portal or by calling 1-833-674-8282. It is recommended to register online due to high call volume.
  • Additionally, you must be the owner of the home and provide proof of ownership at registration.
  • The home must also be your primary residence and you must provide proof of residence.
  • Rentals are not eligible.
  • The home must be more than 6 months old based on the date of the first homeowner’s occupancy.

Eligible property types include:

  • Single and semi-detached houses
  • row housing
  • townhomes
  • all-season cottages
  • mobile homes on a permanent foundation
  • permanently-moored floating homes
  • mixed-use buildings (residential portion only)
  • small multi-unit residential buildings (three storeys or less with a footprint of 600 m2 or less).

Indigenous governments or organizations, such as band councils, land claim organizations, and housing management bodies, can also participate. Contact the program directly for more information.

To be eligible for reimbursement, you must:

  • Have both a pre-retrofit and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation.
  • Upgrade requirements may differ, and any completed upgrades must be both eligible and recommended in the Renovation Upgrade Report you receive from your energy advisor after the pre-retrofit evaluation.

The following upgrades are eligible:

home insulation, air-sealing, windows and doors, thermostats, heating, renewable energy, resiliency measures, and small multi-unit residential buildings (MURBs).
